Gafsa
Gafsa is a city in west-central Tunisia, built around an oasis at the edge of the desert. As Capsa it was a Numidian town taken by Marius in the Jugurthine War, then a Roman town and a Byzantine stronghold; in the 6th century it was the centre of the Berber principality of Antalas. It gives its name to the prehistoric Capsian culture and is today a centre of phosphate mining.
