Garda Síochána

1922 · 20th century · Also known as An Garda Síochána, Gardaí

The Garda Síochána, 'Guardians of the Peace', is the national police force of Ireland, founded in 1922 to replace the Royal Irish Constabulary in the Irish Free State. Unusually for the time and place, it was established as a largely unarmed force. It took its present name in 1923 and absorbed the Dublin Metropolitan Police in 1925.
