Gatun Lake
Gatun Lake is an artificial lake in Panama formed by the Gatun Dam on the Chagres River, built between 1907 and 1913, and on completion the largest man-made lake in the world. It forms a major part of the Panama Canal route, carrying ships 26 metres above sea level between the locks, and supplies the water used in each lock operation. Droughts, notably in 2023–2024, have forced restrictions on canal traffic.
