Geghard

Geghard is a medieval monastery in the Kotayk province of Armenia, partly carved out of the cliffs of the Azat river gorge. Founded according to tradition in the 4th century, its main church dates from 1215, built under the Zakarid princes, and the Proshyan family later added rock-hewn chambers. It is named after the spear (geghard) said to have pierced Christ, once kept there, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
