Georgian Orthodox Church

Also known as Georgian Orthodoxy, Georgian Apostolic Church

The Georgian Orthodox Church is the Eastern Orthodox church of Georgia, dating from the conversion of Kartli in the 4th century. It broke with the Armenian church over the Council of Chalcedon in the early 7th century, a split that shaped allegiances in the Caucasus. Medieval Georgian kings spread it to neighbouring lands such as Hereti and to Armenian nobles in their service.
