George of Antioch was a Greek Christian who served the Zirid rulers of Mahdia before becoming the leading minister and admiral of Roger II of Sicily, with the title emir of emirs. His fleets captured Tripoli in 1146 and Mahdia in 1148, creating a short-lived Sicilian dominion in North Africa, and raided Corfu, Thebes and Corinth in 1147. He founded the church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio in Palermo.
