George of Poděbrady

1420–1471 · 15th century · Also known as George of Kunštát and Poděbrady

George of Poděbrady was a Utraquist Hussite nobleman who governed Bohemia as regent for Ladislaus the Posthumous and was elected king in 1458. He created the County of Kladsko in 1459 and acquired the Duchy of Ziębice for his family. He proposed a league of Christian rulers to keep the peace, but the pope condemned him as a heretic, and from 1468 until his death he fought Matthias Corvinus of Hungary.
