George of Saxony, called the Bearded, was Duke of Saxony from 1500 to 1539 and a firm opponent of Martin Luther. He inherited his father Albert's rights as governor of Friesland, but faced constant revolt and war with Guelders there, and in 1515 sold Friesland to the future Emperor Charles V.
