Charles II, Duke of Guelders

1467–1538 · 16th century · Also known as Charles of Egmond

Charles II, Duke of Guelders, known as Charles of Egmond, recovered the duchy his family had lost to Charles the Bold and fought the Habsburgs for over four decades with French support. He extended his power over Groningen, Friesland and Utrecht. Unable to keep these gains, he left Guelders to William of Cleves, who lost it to Charles V in 1543.
