Ommelanden
The Ommelanden are the rural Frisian districts surrounding the city of Groningen in the northern Netherlands. In the Middle Ages they were self-governing farming communities that the city sought to dominate through its staple rights and courts. From 1594 city and countryside formed the province of Stad en Lande within the Dutch Republic, a union marked by long quarrels, and the area is now part of the province of Groningen.
