Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor

1459–1519 · 15th century · Also known as Maximilian of Habsburg

Maximilian I was a Habsburg ruler, King of the Romans from 1486 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death. His marriage to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 brought the Low Countries to the Habsburgs, and his children's Spanish marriages prepared his grandson Charles V's inheritance of Spain. He ruled Tyrol from Innsbruck, acquired Gorizia in 1500, raised loyal lords to higher rank and at the Diet of Worms in 1495 attempted reform of the empire.
