Grutte Pier

c. 1480–1520 · 16th century · Also known as Pier Gerlofs Donia

Grutte Pier (Pier Gerlofs Donia) was a Frisian farmer and rebel leader, famed for his size and strength. After Saxon troops burned his village of Kimswerd in 1515, he waged a guerrilla war against the Saxon and Habsburg rulers of Friesland with the support of Charles of Egmond, Duke of Guelders, and his ships raided the Zuiderzee coast of Holland. He gave up the leadership in 1519 and died in 1520.
