Grumbates

4th century · 4th century

Grumbates was a king of the Chionites in the mid-4th century CE. After fighting the Sasanian king Shapur II on his eastern frontier, he became Shapur's ally and in 359 led Chionite troops alongside the Persians at the siege of the Roman city of Amida, described by the eyewitness Ammianus Marcellinus. When his young son was killed before the walls, Grumbates demanded vengeance, and the city fell after a siege of 73 days.
