1889–1964 · 20th century

Georges Thierry d'Argenlieu was a French naval officer and Carmelite friar who joined de Gaulle's Free French in 1940 and rose to admiral. As High Commissioner for Indochina from 1945 to 1947 he worked to restore French rule, proclaiming the Autonomous Republic of Cochinchina in June 1946 while talks with the Viet Minh were under way. His hard line contributed to the outbreak of the First Indochina War.
