Georges Lemaître

1894–1966 · 20th century

Georges Lemaître was a Belgian Catholic priest, physicist and astronomer at the University of Leuven. In 1927 he proposed that the universe is expanding, deriving the relationship between distance and recession velocity of galaxies later known as Hubble's law, and in 1931 suggested that it began from a "primeval atom", the origin of the Big Bang theory. He later served as president of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
