Gergovia
Gergovia was a fortified hilltop town of the Arverni in Gaul, on a plateau south of modern Clermont-Ferrand. In 52 BCE Vercingetorix defended it against Julius Caesar, whose assault was repulsed with heavy losses, one of Caesar's rare defeats. The site, now the plateau of Gergovie, has been excavated and has a museum.
