Nitiobroges

300 BCE – 51 BCE (approx.) · capital Aginnum

Gallic people of the middle Garonne around Agen, whose king Teutomatus fought for Vercingetorix at Gergovia.

Origins

The Nitiobroges lived on the Garonne around Aginnum (Agen), at the border between the Celtic peoples and the Aquitani. Caesar notes that their king Ollovico had been honoured by the Roman Senate as a friend.

Rule and society

They were ruled by kings in Caesar's day. Their land lay on the river route from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, and their coins circulated widely in south-western Gaul.

Decline and legacy

Ollovico's son Teutomatus joined Vercingetorix in 52 BCE with cavalry raised in Aquitania; during the attack on Gergovia he escaped from his tent half-dressed on a wounded horse. Under Rome Aginnum became a civitas capital, the origin of Agen.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
