A Western-educated businessman, he was chosen as king-president of the Fante Confederacy, the alliance of coastal Fante states formed at Mankessim in 1868 to resist the transfer of Dutch forts and to organise their own government. The confederacy was suppressed by the British, who made the region the Gold Coast Colony in 1874.
