Giulio Alberoni

1664–1752 · 18th century

Giulio Alberoni was an Italian cardinal and statesman who, as chief minister of Philip V of Spain from 1715 to 1719, tried to restore Spanish power in Italy and provoked the War of the Quadruple Alliance. Dismissed and exiled in 1719, he later returned to papal service as legate of Romagna. In 1739 he occupied San Marino for the Papal States, but the pope restored the republic's independence in February 1740.
