Gonbad-e Sorkh

1147 · 12th century

The Gonbad-e Sorkh, or Red Dome, is a brick tomb tower built in 1147–48 in Maragheh, north-western Iran, under the Ahmadili rulers. Square in plan, with a domed chamber above a crypt, it is decorated with intricate patterned brickwork and touches of glazed tile. Maragheh has several other medieval tomb towers of the Seljuk and Mongol periods.
