Gönpo Namgyal

d. 1865 · 19th century · Also known as Gompo Namgyal

Gönpo Namgyal was a chieftain of Nyarong in Kham, eastern Tibet, who in the mid-19th century built a regional power by conquest. From 1848 he overran neighbouring states including Derge, until an army sent by the Tibetan government at Lhasa defeated him in 1865 and he died in his burning fort. Afterwards Lhasa governed Nyarong through its own commissioner.
