10th century · 10th century · Also known as Castle of Gormaz

Gormaz Castle is a fortress on a ridge above the Duero river in the province of Soria, Spain, one of the largest castles in Europe. Built by the Caliphate of Córdoba and rebuilt in the 960s under al-Hakam II, it guarded the frontier against the Christian kingdoms of the north. Its walls stretch for about a kilometre, and it passed into Castilian hands in the eleventh century.
