Gothic War (535–554)
The Gothic War was fought from 535 to 554 between the Byzantine Empire of Justinian I and the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy. Belisarius took Rome and Ravenna by 540, but the Goths recovered under Totila; Narses finally defeated them at Taginae (552) and Mons Lactarius, and the long war devastated Italy, much of which soon fell to the Lombards.
