Battle of Mons Lactarius

552 or 553 · 6th century · Part of the Gothic War (535–554)

The Battle of Mons Lactarius was fought near Mount Vesuvius in Campania in 552 or 553 between the Byzantine army of Narses and the last Ostrogothic king, Teia. After a stand-off of about two months the Goths attacked, and Teia was killed in the fighting. The defeat marked the end of the Ostrogothic Kingdom as an organised power in Italy.
