Battle of Taginae

552 · 6th century · Also known as Battle of Busta Gallorum · Part of the Gothic War (535–554)

The Battle of Taginae, also called Busta Gallorum, was fought in the Apennines of central Italy in the summer of 552. A Byzantine army under the eunuch general Narses defeated the Ostrogoths, and their king Totila was mortally wounded. The battle broke Gothic power in Italy and opened the way for the final Byzantine reconquest of the peninsula.
