Battle of Tagliacozzo

1268 · 13th century

The Battle of Tagliacozzo was fought on 23 August 1268 in the Abruzzi. Charles of Anjou, using a hidden reserve, defeated Conradin, the sixteen-year-old last heir of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, who had come to reclaim the Kingdom of Sicily. Conradin was captured and beheaded in Naples that October, ending Hohenstaufen rule in Italy and securing the kingdom for the Angevins.
