Castel Nuovo

1279 · 13th century · Also known as Maschio Angioino

Castel Nuovo is a castle on the harbour of Naples, begun in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou when he moved the capital from Palermo. It was rebuilt in the fifteenth century by Alfonso V of Aragon, whose triumphal entrance arch, celebrating his entry into the city in 1443, is among the earliest Renaissance monuments in southern Italy. It served as the royal residence of the Angevin and Aragonese kings.
