Guarionex

d. 1502 · 15th century

Guarionex was the paramount cacique of Maguá, in the Vega Real of north-central Hispaniola, when Columbus arrived. Burdened by Spanish demands for tribute in gold and food, he led a revolt in 1497–1498 but was captured. In 1502 he drowned when the fleet taking him to Spain was wrecked by a hurricane.
