Sweet potato

Also known as sweet potatoes

The sweet potato is a starchy root crop native to the Americas that spread across the world after the sixteenth century through Spanish and Portuguese trade networks. In China it was one of several New World crops, alongside maize and peanuts, that allowed cultivation of marginal hill and upland land. Accounts of the Qing Empire link these crops to the dramatic population growth of Qing China.
