Hairun

r. 1535–1570 · 16th century · Also known as Sultan Hairun of Ternate

Hairun was sultan of Ternate in the Maluku Islands from 1535 to 1570. He sought to balance alliance with the Portuguese, who held a fort on the island, against the interests of Ternate and of Islam, and was at one point taken to Goa by them. In 1570 the Portuguese murdered him at their fort, provoking the revolt by which his son Babullah drove them out.
