Harbin

Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang province in north-east China, on the Songhua River. It grew from a small settlement after 1898, when Russia made it the headquarters of the Chinese Eastern Railway, and became a cosmopolitan city with a large Russian population. Under Japanese rule it was part of Manchukuo, and the notorious Unit 731 carried out biological warfare experiments on prisoners at nearby Pingfang.
