Hasmonean dynasty

Also known as Hasmonean

The Hasmonean dynasty ruled Judea in the second and first centuries BCE. It arose from the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire, sparked by religious persecution and Hellenising pressures. Its establishment of an independent Jewish state illustrates the Seleucid Empire's loss of control over its subject peoples.
