Hassi Messaoud

Hassi Messaoud is a town in the north-eastern Algerian Sahara that grew around one of Africa's largest oil fields, discovered in 1956 as French Algeria entered its final crisis. The Sahara's oil and gas made control of the desert a major issue in the independence negotiations, and they became the basis of independent Algeria's economy.
