Hastinapura

Also known as Hastinapur

Hastinapura is an ancient town in Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, India, near an old bed of the Ganges, celebrated in the Mahabharata as the capital of the Kuru kings. Excavations in the 1950s found Painted Grey Ware settlement of the early 1st millennium BCE and evidence of a great flood, which has been linked to the tradition that the Kuru court moved to Kaushambi after the Ganges destroyed the city. It is also a Jain pilgrimage centre.
