Person
Hatuey
Hatuey was a Taíno chief from Hispaniola who fled to eastern Cuba and led resistance against the Spanish conquest under Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. Captured, he was burned alive in 1512. Bartolomé de las Casas recorded that he refused baptism, saying he did not wish to go to a heaven where Spaniards were; he is honoured in Cuba as its first national hero.
