Miguel Tacón

1775–1855 · 19th century · Also known as Miguel Tacón y Rosique

Miguel Tacón was a Spanish general who served as captain-general of Cuba from 1834 to 1838. He ruled with near-absolute powers, suppressed crime and dissent in Havana and carried out major public works, including a prison, roads, markets and the Tacón Theatre. He opposed Creole liberal demands, and Cuban deputies were excluded from the Spanish Cortes in 1837 during his rule.
