Hawiye

The Hawiye are one of the major Somali clan families, living mainly in central and southern Somalia, including Mogadishu, and in parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. They are divided into many clans, among them the Abgaal and Habar Gidir. Hawiye groups overthrew Ajuran rule in the late 17th century and have dominated the politics of Mogadishu since 1991.
