Henry Grattan

1746–1820 · 18th century

Henry Grattan was an Irish politician and orator who led the Patriot opposition in the Irish Parliament. Backed by the Volunteers, he won the repeal of the Declaratory Act and the amendment of Poynings' Law in 1782, giving the Irish Parliament legislative independence, a period often called 'Grattan's Parliament'. He opposed the Act of Union and later campaigned for Catholic emancipation in the House of Commons at Westminster.
