Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle is a complex of buildings in central Dublin, begun in the early 13th century on the orders of King John. For about 700 years it was the seat of English and later British government in Ireland, housing the lord deputy or lord lieutenant and the administration, so that 'Dublin Castle' came to stand for British rule itself. It was handed over to the Irish Free State in 1922.
