Herbert I, Count of Maine

d. c. 1035 · 11th century · Also known as Herbert Wakedog

Herbert I (died c. 1035), known as Wakedog (Éveille-Chien), was Count of Maine from about 1015. He defended Maine against the expansion of Fulk Nerra of Anjou, and his nickname is said to come from night raids that kept the Angevins' dogs barking. His descendants kept Maine independent until Norman and Angevin pressure overcame them later in the century.
