Le Mans
Le Mans is a city on the Sarthe in north-western France. As Vindinum it was the chief town of the Gallic Cenomani, and its late Roman walls are among the best preserved in France. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of the counts of Maine, fought over by Anjou and Normandy, and Henry II of England was born there in 1133. Its cathedral of Saint Julian is a landmark of Romanesque and Gothic building.
