House of Billung

10th century–1106 · 10th century · Also known as Billung dynasty, Billungs

The House of Billung was a Saxon noble family whose members were dukes of Saxony from the 10th century until 1106. Its founder, Hermann Billung, was given command of the frontier against the Slavs along the lower Elbe by Otto I around 936, the region later called the Billung March. The line ended with Duke Magnus in 1106, and the duchy passed to Lothair of Supplinburg.
