Gottschalk (Obotrite prince)
Gottschalk was a prince of the Obotrites in the mid-11th century who built a large realm among the Slavs of present-day Mecklenburg and Holstein. Raised as a Christian, he worked with Archbishop Adalbert of Hamburg-Bremen to found churches and bishoprics among his people. He was killed in a pagan uprising at Lenzen in June 1066, which drove out the clergy and German influence.
