Gudfred

d. 810 · 9th century · Also known as Godfred, Godfrid

Gudfred was a king of the Danes in the early 9th century and an opponent of Charlemagne. In 808 he attacked the Obotrites, allies of the Franks, destroyed their trading port of Reric and moved its merchants to Hedeby, and he strengthened the Danevirke earthwork across southern Jutland. He was murdered in 810 after raiding Frisia, as Charlemagne prepared for war against him.
