tribal confederation · Germany and Central Europe
Obotrite Confederation
Origins
The Obotrites (Abodrites) were West Slavic tribes who settled the coastlands of Mecklenburg and Holstein from the 7th century. From around 780 they appear as allies of Charlemagne against the Saxons, and their prince Drasco helped defeat the Nordalbingian Saxons in 798.
Rule and society
The confederation united several tribes, including the Wagrians and Polabians, under princes with strongholds such as Mecklenburg near Wismar and Starigard (Oldenburg in Holstein). Trade passed through the port of Reric until the Danish king Godfred destroyed it in 808. Princes Gottschalk and Henry tried to Christianise the realm; a pagan revolt in 1066 killed Gottschalk.
Decline and legacy
The Wendish Crusade of 1147 and the campaigns of Henry the Lion broke Obotrite power; Prince Niklot was killed in 1160. His son Pribislav accepted Saxon overlordship and Christianity in 1167, founding the Lordship of Mecklenburg, whose dynasty ruled until 1918.
