Lordship of Mecklenburg

1167 CE – 1348 CE · capital Wismar

The Christian lordship founded by the Obotrite prince Pribislav, whose dynasty ruled Mecklenburg from 1167 to 1918.

Origins

After Henry the Lion's campaigns destroyed Obotrite power and killed Prince Niklot in 1160, his son Pribislav accepted Christianity and Saxon overlordship. In 1167 Henry restored most of his father's lands to him, except the County of Schwerin. Pribislav's descendants took their title from the old stronghold of Mecklenburg near Wismar.

Rule and society

The lords encouraged German settlement, founding towns such as Rostock, Wismar and Güstrow, several of which joined the Hanseatic League. Doberan Abbey, founded in 1171, became the family burial place. After 1229 the lands divided into Mecklenburg, Werle, Rostock and Parchim-Richenberg, each with its own branch.

Decline and legacy

In 1348 Emperor Charles IV raised Albert II of Mecklenburg to duke. His son Albert became King of Sweden in 1364. Mecklenburg remained ruled by the same dynasty, divided into Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, until 1918, the only Slavic-origin ruling house in Germany.
