Doberan Abbey

1171 · 12th century · Also known as Doberan Minster

Doberan Abbey was a Cistercian monastery near the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg, founded in 1171 by Pribislav, the first Christian prince of the Obotrites. Its brick Gothic church, Doberan Minster, became the burial place of the Mecklenburg dynasty. The abbey was dissolved during the Reformation in 1552, but the church survives as one of the finest examples of Brick Gothic.
