Starigard

Starigard, now Oldenburg in Holstein in northern Germany, was the main stronghold of the Wagrians, a West Slavic tribe of the Obotrite confederation. Its large ringwall fortress, built around the 8th century, enclosed princely halls and later churches, and it became the seat of a missionary bishopric in the 10th century. The area was taken over by German settlers in the 12th century.
