Wendish Crusade

1147 · 12th century · Part of the Second Crusade

The Wendish Crusade of 1147 was a campaign of Saxon, Danish and Polish princes against the pagan Slavs, or Wends, east of the Elbe, authorised by Pope Eugenius III as part of the Second Crusade. Armies led by Henry the Lion, Albert the Bear and others besieged Dobin and Demmin but achieved little lasting conversion. It nevertheless opened a period of German expansion and settlement in Mecklenburg, Pomerania and Brandenburg.
