Eugenius

d. 394 · 4th century

Eugenius (died 394) was western Roman emperor from 392 to 394, a teacher of rhetoric raised to the throne by the Frankish general Arbogast after the death of Valentinian II. Though a Christian, he tolerated a revival of paganism among the Roman senatorial aristocracy. Theodosius I refused to recognise him and defeated him at the Battle of the Frigidus, after which he was executed.
